Valissima Institute is a new training opportunity for young exceptional female musicians to gain experience as conductors. Participants hone their skills on the podium leading a professional ensemble and as soloist leaders. No formal conducting training or podium experience is required to study at Valissima.

The Valissima experience is designed to create a supportive environment for new conductors, cultivating their leadership and musicality. In addition to instruction on the podium, participants also have chamber music coachings, performance opportunities, and theory instruction. This elite training opportunity culminates in a public conducting performance with a professional symphony orchestra.

Conducting faculty in the inaugural summer included preeminent conductors including Karina Canellakis, Alan Gilbert, Daniela Candillari, and Timothy Meyers. The first-of-its-kind training initiative for young women, Valissima selects accomplished young musicians to translate their musical vision to the podium. Participants are given the tools to translate their musicality from the instrument to the baton.

In its first summer, participants led the APEX Ensemble, an ensemble where musicians from exemplary ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra mentor fellows from conservatories such as The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music to become the next generation of orchestral musicians. This holistic environment ensures that Valissima participants develop their skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
